UIPM and Its Participation in International Conferences:
UIPM and Its Participation in International Conferences:
UIPM (Universal Institute of Professional Management) has been granted special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as of 2022. This status provides UIPM with significant privileges, such as:
Attendance at United Nations Meetings: UIPM can participate in U.N. meetings, regional NGO conferences, and international congresses. It also has the right to make oral presentations and submit written statements to governments on relevant issues.
Placement of Items on the ECOSOC Agenda: With consultative status, UIPM has the ability to propose items for the ECOSOC agenda, allowing the institution to directly influence discussions on matters within the scope of ECOSOC's activities.
Networking with Other NGOs: UIPM can network with other organizations, expanding its global influence and contributing to the implementation and follow-up of major international conferences.
Contribution to International Debates: UIPM can actively participate in deliberations concerning social, economic, and sustainable development, as NGOs with consultative status provide technical analysis, expertise, and feedback during U.N. discussions.
NGO Status at the United Nations:
The consultative relationship between the U.N. and NGOs stems from Article 71 of the U.N. Charter, which allows ECOSOC to establish consultative arrangements with NGOs involved in matters within its competence. NGOs are categorized into three levels of consultative status:
General Consultative Status: For large, international NGOs addressing a broad range of issues relevant to ECOSOC.
Special Consultative Status: For NGOs with expertise in specific areas aligned with ECOSOC's objectives.
Roster Status: For NGOs that contribute occasionally to ECOSOC's work.
This relationship enables NGOs to influence U.N. deliberations on social and economic matters, though they do not have a direct role in more politically charged bodies like the U.N. General Assembly or the Security Council.
Eligibility for Consultative Status:
For an NGO to be eligible for consultative status with ECOSOC, it must meet several criteria, including:
Being officially recognized by a government and in existence for at least two years.
Having a democratically adopted constitution and established headquarters.
Maintaining accountability and transparency in decision-making processes.
Demonstrating relevance to the aims of the United Nations, especially in areas like human rights, education, social welfare, or economic development.
NGOs with consultative status are instrumental in contributing to the follow-up and implementation of international conferences, ensuring their goals are recognized at the global level.
